Joan returns to her family mansion in New England to care for her father, a once-successful artist who was severely burned in an accident and is now bedridden. Working as a sound engineer for film, Joan is obsessed with noises and recordings, a trait that becomes crucial when she begins to notice unexplained sounds in the house. At the same time, she tries to understand her mother’s unsolved disappearance and her father’s strange occult activities. The deeper she investigates, the clearer it becomes that the ghosts of her childhood may not be merely metaphorical. Starring Sasha Frolova, “Recluse” combines horror, mystery and psychological thriller in a story about family trauma, memory and houses that keep their secrets all too well. Premiering at Tribeca 2026, it is also a reminder that going back to your parents’ house can be complicated even without supernatural forces.
